A dramatic love story. The hero, forced into a fight, kills his opponent. Years later, without knowing her identity, he falls in love with the man's widow, and the story is of the adjustment of their lives after discovery of the circumstances.

I liked this book for the most part, but some things happened that I was not OK with. As seems to be usual in a Dell book, our hero is somewhat damaged. In this case, the outer shell is beautiful, but the inside needs some work. Dell wants to present him as a great man who's tormented by demons, but I really only think she showed us the demons. I never saw the greatness that other characters ascribed to him. The demons, though--the first chapter shows him losing his temper and savagely beating his dog for disobeying him--Dell portrays quite vividly. I found it impossible to forgive Piers for his actions toward his wife and wasn't keen on her forgiving him either. Theirs was an intriguing love story--I love that Dell wasn't afraid to make her heroine older than her hero--but the romance was marred, in my opinion, by the hero's unforgivable actions.

Bars of Iron is a spellbinding romance.Like most of Ms. Dell's books it is about people falling in love in upper-class England. The main theme of the book involves Piers Evesham and the woman he loves. Her name is Avery and she is the mother's help at vicourage not far from Piers' Estate. There are a lot of interesting characters in this book.Piers' cantankorous, woman hating grandfather is one of many of them. I must warn you however, there are a couple of parts with physical child abuse that I found hard to read. There are lot's of plot twists and turns, and like most of Ms. Dells work a happy ending.I loved this book and would recommend it to anyone.
Great reading, she is a wonderful writer. Is hard to believe she lived long ago.
This Christian love story by Ethel M. Dell is a very sweet love story. It is filled with strife and has many twists and turns. It also is a very moving story of Christian forgiveness. This is one of my favorite books, and I highly recommend it to anyone.
I have loved E.M. Dell for over 20 years when I accidentally stumbled across it in a box of my Dad's school things, it had been required in a high school class. The book was 'Way of an Eagle', by the third page I was hooked, certainly it is not Shakespeare, but it engendered in me such a interest that I ended up scouring antique malls and stacks in the library to find all of her books.
I am now the proud owner of all of her books in hardback.

You will find some fascinating glimpses of the period in her books, as well as a substantial dose of romance and adventure.

Despite being touted as Christian, do not let that put you off, almost every person was in that era, and including Biblical references was a sop to over zealous mothers and pastors to make such romance perceived palatable and wholesome.
This romance is more spicier than the others i have read from Ethel Dell. The woman is older that her lover, of a different social class, and has had a previous marriage and child that died. There are many characters with the usual misunderstandings that result in separation for the couple. Healing and reconciliation come with the intervention of two special friends and the children of the minister. I found that the fierce insistence of the minister to inflict punishment on his children a bit exaggerated. The lovers were also shaped and molded through harsh discipline which was beneficial in the long run. I agree that Piers's survival from a shot through the heart miraculous but the supernatural occurrences make the story suspenseful. It is a wonderful love story woven with Dell's usual scripture and song references. Most enjoyable.
