Harbison's newest title is a quick, light read. There's nothing "deep" about it or thought provoking about it, but it still pulls the reader in with the character development she did with the main character. She becomes someone you want to root for, you want to like, and you want to see everything turn out well for. She's like your next door neighbor or your best friend. How can you not like that? Though the plot of the story was insanely predictable, there were enough other good things (humor for one)to make it worth the read.

When in Doubt, Add Butter is an airy, happy story where the bad things are uncomfortable but not too bad, and the good things are easy and happy. I think this book is less of a beach read, but a better choice for a rainy day or when you need something to cheer you up.

When in Doubt, Add Butter follows the life of Gemma, a personal chef, for a few months. Having tried other careers, Gemma has found happiness in her passion for cooking and running her own business. Unfortunately, many of the people that can afford a private cook aren't the easiest to work for, and running a small business has left Gemma cash poor. Suddenly free on a Friday night after being fired by a client, Gemma goes to a bar with a friend and meets a guy she finds very attractive and somehow familiar, although she has never met him before.

The plot of the book then follows Gemma's pleasant and difficult relationships with her customers, her ambivalence about wanting and fearing love, and her desire to not only cook, but nurture the clients that will allow her to do so. Gemma faces professional and personal challenges, but she's also been told by a client / psychic that everything will be OK, and somehow, both Gemma and the reader believes this.

When in Doubt, Add Butter is a happy story that shines softly, recommended to anyone looking for a few hours of escape and a lovely ending.
This book was great from start to finish! Fun read! I literally laughed out loud a few times! One of my favorite authors!
I found this to be a charming story with a good amount of humor throughout. Beth Harbison's other books are great too. I would be a happy camper if Beth and her humor lived next door to me. I would be smiling all the time.
Very enjoyable read. I was just a bit confused about one point in the story. Gemma (the main character) describes a picture in Mr. Tuesday's apartment that she (logically) assumes is of him. However, if I followed the story correctly, it would seem that the picture is of his brother, not him. Here's where I got confused. Why would he prominently display a picture of his brother? That point was never clarified.
Got this for my niece in Australia and she loved it. I liked the story, too; it is interesting, especially for those who love to cook.
Gemma knows just what ingredients to use to make any dish an award winning one. So on the personal chef side, she's covered. Unfortunately, her life isn't so easily controlled. Suddenly she finds herself dealing with an unpredicted occurrence and she has to find it in herself to take a chance and move forward.

A quick, fun, uncomplicated read. This is cute, fun story that is very predictable, but that doesn't take away from the enjoyability of it. It's basically the definition of a beach read. Something that will make you smile, put you in a good mood, but won't leave any lasting impression on you.
This is the first book I've read by this author and now I'm obsessed. I just bought 2 more of her books. She's a great writer and I loved how long the book was--not short and quick. I loved the cooking parts too and the romance was great. Excellent and I highly recommend the audio CD version. Feels like you're watching a movie.
